Excel 2007 Conditional Formatting - Why would I want to use that?

A nifty feature in Excel 2007 is Conditional Formatting.  It will help you identify numbers that meet criteria that you set by highlighting it or denoting it another way.

For example, let's say you have a list of numbers and you need to identify the cells with values less than 500.
-In Excel 2007

1. Highlight all the cells that have the numbers you want to evaluate
2. Click the Conditional Formatting button in the Ribbon

3. Select Highlight Cells Rules > Less Than...

-In the Format Cells Less Than field
4. Enter '500'
5. Click 'OK'

-All Cells less than 500 are highlighted

You can also apply:

  • Color Scale
  • Data Bar (kinda like a bar graph)
  • Icons

As other methods to identify numbers.

That's it!

If you are one of the new users of Microsoft Office 2007, undoubtedly you are using MS Word.  You have probably have noticed that the line spacing is different than earlier versions.  Actually, the line spacing is set to 1.5 lines between each line by default.  If you find this undesirable, there is a way to fix it.  Here's how

This makes the change to eliminate the additional spacing.  In Word 2007
-Under the Home tab in the Ribbon
1. Find the Paragraph section
2. Click the down right arrow

-The Paragraph window appears

3. Change the After field to '0 pt'
4. Select 'Single' from the Line spacing: field
5. Click the 'Default...'
6. Click 'Yes'

You can also use this to change the default Font and Font Size.
That's it!

Microsoft Word Numbering numbering more than you want?

Oct 21 2007
If you use Microsoft Word you probably have use the Numbering feature to number several lines (paragraphs) in sequence.  The problem with this feature is that if you try to apply the Numbering feature to several lines scattered within the a document, sometimes Microsoft Word tries to carry-over the previous numbering sequence to additional lines which you may not necessarily want.

To quickly overcome this, here’s what you do:
1. Select/Highlight the Entire Line (Paragraph)
2. Right Click on the Selected Line
3. Select ‘Restart Numbering’ or in Word 2007 select ‘Restart at 1’

If you never used the Numbering feature, here’s how:
1. Select the Lines (paragraphs) that you want to apply a numbering sequence
2. Format > Bullets and Numbering…
3. Click the ‘Number’ tab
4. Select the Number format style you like
5. Click OK
*You can even select the Numbering button in the Formatting Toolbar at the top of the Screen

That's it!
